Joel Fernando is a Mumbai-based flautist, composer, and change professional.
By day he works in organisation development and change - helping teams adapt, learn, and move through transformation. By night he writes, arranges, and records music.
He is mostly self-taught on flute, and later mentored by P.M.K. Naveen Kumar - the flautist behind A.R. Rahman’s Roja and Bombay theme, and a regular in rooms with Grammy-winning composers. Joel later played flute on Spotify India’s Kautilya (The Echo Project), a session alongside Naveen Kumar, Rishab Rikhiram Sharma, and Anuradha Pal.
His woodwind work has appeared across films, OTT, albums, and ads — hook lines, background scores, and sessions. Credits include Brahmastra and Amazon Prime’s Four More Shots Please Season 3. On the jingle side: Nokia’s Ultimate Nokia Tune Mashup, produced by Ehsaan and Loy; RSBL Gold; and scores for several short films.
His Indian flute take on Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You was listed by Radio & Music USA among the top instrumental covers worldwide. He was nominated for an IRAA in 2014. His flute on Advait Sawant’s Naav Moryache Mukhi, sung by Swapnil Bandodkar, is among the independent recordings that first brought his playing to a wider audience.
As an artist he writes and produces his own work. Keh Na Paau and Bas Tu Nahi were featured on Red FM, including interviews and Red Indies Shuffle. Other releases include the Safar Album and singles such as Umeed, Sehemi Si Rahi, and Taare Sun Rahe Hai.
Joel is a TEDx speaker. He also experiments at the meeting point of music and facilitation, running sessions that use sound, story, and group work at institutes and professional forums.
He does not treat music and work as rival lives. He treats them as one practice: listen, adapt, and leave people with something they can carry.
